The Trek connected individuals to the world of professional individuals and leaders whom are making a difference in society. We managed to visit three non-profit organizations, which from all the organization each graciously accepted to sit down with the delegates and explain to them what it is they do. The delegates managed to make connections with people inside these organizations by exchanging emails and got to understand how they themselves could have an impact on society.

The program was designed to make the delegates demonstrate their skills and most things had to be done by delegates. The tasks given to Trekkers were all small but extremely vital to their lives in the future. For instance, if one of the delegates was interested in engineering, the task would be to track down a professor in that department and set up a meeting with him or her. This was something challenging for all the delegates, as the email had to be professional and formal.  It wasn’t the context that the delegates struggled with, it was the format and framing it in a right way that was a challenge. This task alone taught them how to formally arrange meetings with high-ranking officials as well as how to properly craft a formal email.

Trekkers opened their eyes to new possibilities and developed concrete paths to their goals. Meeting with people from real organizations face-to-face was a huge advantage to visualizing one’s future; how to navigate and get around in a new city is something that cannot be taught in the classroom; coming together for debrief meetings and reflecting on how to apply one’s style of leadership to everyday life is something that cannot be manufactured. Ultimately, coming together as a team, developing friendships while traveling and over interesting meals, while learning about and experiencing the United States is something that won’t be forgotten.
