Twenty-two scholars from the Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard Business School, Tufts Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Harvard Graduate School of Education, Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Harvard Medical School, and the Northwestern Kellogg School of Management kickstarted the Asia Leadership Trek (ALT) Winter 2017 which began in Yangon, Myanmar on December 26, 2016.

Throughout the one-month program, the participants or Trekkers underwent a jam-packed but exciting schedule that enabled them to deepen their understanding of Asia and to gain invaluable hands-on experience from key thought leaders in their respective fields.

The Trekkers started their adventure in Yangon, Myanmar with a meeting with UN and INGO Forum to learn more about the aspects involved in humanitarian and development activities in Myanmar. They then met with General Thura Tin Oo, a retired general, former commander in chief of the armed forces of Union of Myanmar, highly decorated soldier, pro-democracy activist and now currently serving as Chairman of the National League for Democracy (NLD) in Myanmar. As Myanmar prepares to face the challenges of the 21st century, the Trekkers and General Tin Oo discussed topics that highlighted essential leadership qualities needed for the country to thrive, including ‘Leadership that Myanmar Needs,’ ‘Global Integration of Myanmar’ and ‘Personal Leadership Lessons.’

They enjoyed dinner at the stylish Rangoon Tea House, founded by Htet Myet Oo who was featured on the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia list. The traditional tea shop inspired restaurant is popular amongst locals and tourists alike, and Htet has high ambitions of taking Burmese cuisine global with his latest venture.

On their last day in Myanmar, the Trekkers participated in a conference hosted by AISEC Myanmar and enabled the Trekkers to conduct a TED-style Talk, Panel Discussion as well as workshops and career mentoring sessions for the participants. Before departing the country, the Trekkers partook in a dialogue with the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI) to discuss challenges facing the local business community as they enter the globalized economy, experiences and best practices learned by local and foreign companies in Myanmar, and the nation’s advantages and outlook for success in a local, regional and global context.[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ layout=”1_1″ spacing=”” center_content=”no” hover_type=”none” link=”” min_height=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=”” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_position=”left top” background_repeat=”no-repeat” border_size=”0″ border_color=”” border_style=”solid” border_position=”all” padding=”” dimension_margin=”” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”left” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_offset=”” last=”no”][fusion_imageframe image_id=”15009″ style_type=”none” stylecolor=”” hover_type=”none” bordersize=”” bordercolor=”” borderradius=”” align=”center” lightbox=”no” gallery_id=”” lightbox_image=”” alt=”Mr. Samuel Kim, Co-founder and President of the Center for Asia Leadership delivering his speech at the opening ceremony of the Asia Leadership Conference 2017 in Kuala Lumpur.” link=”” linktarget=”_self” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”fade” animation_direction=”static” animation_speed=”1.0″ animation_offset=””]http://asia-leadership-2023.local/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/ALT-Winter-2017_Myanmar-UMFCCI-1024×478.jpg[/fusion_imageframe][fusion_text]

His work in Vietnam revolved around provincial economic strategies including tourism promotion, industrial development and agricultural productivity. He updated the Trekkers on the state of economic development in Vietnam which has been described as a vital emerging market in Asia today. Last but not least, the Trekkers took part in a dialogue with the Fulbright Program in Vietnam to know more about its efforts in providing learning and research opportunities in the areas of social sciences and humanities to well-deserved Vietnamese.

The Trekkers continued their journey in Jakarta, Indonesia with a meeting with GO-JEK, Indonesia’s Uber for motorcycles to learn about how the motorcycle-hailing app can make a difference in dealing with Jakarta’s traffic woes and its impact on society, followed by a discussion with GDP Venture, a venture builder that focuses on digital communities, media, commerce and solution companies in the Indonesian consumer internet industry. In Jakarta, they managed to do some sightseeing including a visit to the National Monument, Istiqlal Mosque which is the largest mosque in Southeast Asia and the Jakarta Cathedral. Indonesia is the fourth largest coffee producer and exporter in the world. No visit to Indonesia would be complete without tasting the country’s premium coffee. At Giyanti Coffee Roastery, the Trekkers got to experience local authentic coffee made from one of the finest coffee beans in the world. The Trekkers were also impressed with the traditional Indonesian culture when they attended Andi Sparringa’s wedding reception which exuded elegance and a rich cultural glow. They learned more about Indonesia’s culture and tradition through a visit to Polyglot Indonesia, a non-profit organization that promotes the preservation of local languages.
