I hope you have had a wonderful holiday season and a great start to 2017.

The past year has been an eventful one for the Center for Asia Leadership (CAL) as it has been marked by significant and meaningful milestones. As we shift our focus and energy into the new year, there is no better time to reflect on the past 12 months and rethink our strategy and objectives to continue our commitment to excellence in everything that we do.

I am happy and delighted to share with you CAL’s achievements last year which have greatly contributed to our goal of creating effective and entrepreneurial leaders in Asia. In February, we launched three books, namely ‘Entrepreneurship and Economic Development in Asia,’ ‘Finding the Leaders in Us: New Goals for Success,’ and ‘Redefining Success: Learning to Lead for Change.’ These books provided readers with invaluable insights into the minds of today’s youth and young professionals who have benefited from their participation in CAL’s programs. I believe their experiences will influence the young generation to explore their life purpose and spark action to implement change in their communities. The launch of the publications also served as an introduction to the establishment of CAL’s Asian regional headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

CAL carried out a myriad of key initiatives throughout 2016 as part of our dedication to make the Harvard experience more accessible to a wider audience and to instill 21st-century skills in today’s leaders so that they will step up to the plate and become better leaders for tomorrow.

Our Asia Leadership Institute (ALI) initiative organized the ‘Personal Leadership: Ethics, Power and Decision Making’ and ‘Case Method Teaching: A Way Forward for Effective Pedagogy’ programs with Professor Mathias Risse and Professor Ken Winston respectively, from the Harvard Kennedy School. We also ran the ‘Leading Change for Organizational Renewal’ workshop, led by Professor Dean Williams, Adjunct Lecturer in Public Policy for the Center for Public Leadership, Harvard Kennedy School. These programs attracted working professionals from around the world including Bangladesh, Germany, Japan, Kosovo, Malaysia and Pakistan.

The Asia Leadership Youth and Scholar (ALYS) programs saw the participation of young leaders from countries such as Malaysia, China, Japan, Korea, Cambodia, Iran, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan to learn the latest and innovative approaches to address 21st century leadership challenges. One of the ALYS programs was the Global Leadership Trek 2016 that offered high school, college and university students the opportunity to expand their horizons through a 17-day journey through the U.S., enabling them to gain firsthand experience on current world issues impacting the realms of politics, business and education.

Meanwhile, the Asia Leadership Trek 2016 brought Harvard scholars from different backgrounds to engage with prominent stakeholders in Asia and discover pressing issues affecting the region while immersing themselves in the local culture.

I anticipate increased uncertainties in 2017 following the outcome of the U.S. presidential election results and Brexit vote which indicate a new trend toward nationalism and de-globalization. At CAL, our definition of leadership is based on our core philosophy of ‘knowing, doing and being’ which motivates leaders to know themselves, and be genuine, ethical, inspirational and creative to tackle the existing and unprecedented challenges that lie ahead in the 21st century. Having the right mindset, attitude and values, and the ability to be agile and adaptable are essential to develop competent leaders who always look at the bigger picture and turn challenges into opportunities. This is what every leader should aspire to be. We live in a complex world that requires such leadership qualities to get us through this day and age.

CAL will continue to offer innovative programs that are closely aligned with global challenges to build authentic leaders who are honest, humble, intelligent, passionate and flexible to bring about change that will notably impact their organizations and communities. We are devoted to providing you with a variety of programs that will help spur you to become change makers who are constantly exploring ways to lead your organizations and communities into the future.

The Asia Leadership Trek (ALT) 2017 recently concluded with 22 participants or Trekkers from 16 different countries, visiting eight cities in six countries across Asia from December 26, 2016 to January 21, 2017. The Trekkers came from distinguished universities including Harvard, Tufts Fletcher and Northwestern. The Trek took place at an interesting time for the Trekkers as they engaged with prominent thought leaders and key stakeholders from various groups at different levels to gain insights on how Asia’s future develops, following the current world scenario. Besides learning about the rich cultures in Asia, I am confident that the Trekkers managed to deepen their understanding of the interdependence between Asia and the world through the ALT 2017.

In 2017, you can look forward to the Asia Leadership Trek XII which involves five countries in Asia, the Asia Leadership Fellowship VI in Vietnam, Japan, Korea, China, Malaysia, and Bangladesh, the Global Leadership Trek II and the Global Education Trek 2017 that takes education practitioners and policymakers from Asia and the U.S. to both continents’ education capitals to explore the world’s best educational practices.

We will be launching three new books in February this year. They are ‘Rethinking Asia: Leading in 21st Century Asia,’ ‘Leaders in Development: Enhancing Your Leadership Effectiveness in a Changing World,’ and ‘Next Generation Leadership: Empowering Youth to Shape the Future of Asia.’ These books feature authors from 16 countries who have benefited from our programs last year.

Three other publications, namely ‘Unleashing the Power of Influence: Insights and Tools for Discussion Leadership,’ ‘Women & Leadership in Asia: Stories of 18 Formidable Leaders,’ and ‘Becoming a Professional Thinker: A Holistic Approach to Growing Your Impact’ are also in the pipeline.

The ALI will be conducting more compelling programs throughout 2017 including Global Change Agents that covers ‘Disciplined Leadership,’ ‘Adaptive Leadership,’ ‘Perspective Leadership’ and ‘Global Leadership.’ The Leadership Summer School will offer ‘Harvard’s Way of Developing a Talent’ for working professionals, and ‘Asia Leadership Youth Camp,’ ‘Asian Union Leaders Summit’ and ‘Trilateral Leadership Summit’ for youth. Meanwhile, Leadership in Development will provide programs such as ‘Negotiation & Mediation Strategies for Managers’ and ‘Developing a Powerful Gender Partnership’ for working professionals, and ‘Mega-Trends of the 21st Century and Talents Required’ and ‘Unleashing Creative & Innovative Capacities’ for youth.

These are some of the interesting events happening in 2017. Hence, do visit our website and follow us on social media to keep up with all of our latest news and events. I thoroughly enjoy hearing feedback from all of you and I hope you will continue to be part of the CAL family.

I am extremely proud of our accomplishments and I would like to express my sincere thanks and gratitude to all of you for your contributions in helping us achieve this success. I truly value your continued support and I look forward to remarkable and memorable things to come in 2017. With that, I invite you to join me in working closely together in whatever capacity to accomplish momentous things in the new year of 2017.

Wishing you all a wonderful year ahead!

Warm regards,

Samuel Kim[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]
