Online courses break down ‘science of change-making’

How does change happen and what is needed to sustain it? What forces need to be at work for change leadership to create lasting impact? Responding to the need to break down the science of change-making in the 21st century, the Center for Asia Leadership will be launching on July 22 CAL Online at http://online.asialeadership.org.

CAL Online is an online learning platform that provides courses, workshops, and seminars on both the human side of innovation as well as its more technical dimension like Design Thinking.

Leading-edge resources

According to Director of Asia Leadership Teaching Fellows & Online Learning Matthew Turner, what sets CAL Online apart is its leading-edge resources on initiating and managing change. “CAL online offers the best of Harvard thought leadership and teaching practices for everyone and wherever you are in Asia,” he said in an interview.

CAL Online’s other features include:

  • The engaging teaching styles of Harvard fellows and faculty
  • Regular course releases
  • Work-at-your-own-pace
  • Responsive site design

CAL Online includes a mix of free and paid courses and workshops by Rajan Patel, the co-inventor of the low-cost Embrace Baby Incubator which has saved 300,000 low-birth-weight babies through its innovative design; Dana Born, a retired brigadier general of the U.S. Air Force, co-director of the Center for Public Leadership, and the first woman to be appointed Dean of the Faculty at the U.S. Air Force Academy; and Steven Jarding, former lecturer at Harvard University who was voted “Teacher of the Year” by the Harvard Kennedy School student body in 2016, among others.

Once they have created an account, users will gain access to various workshops and courses on Design Thinking, ethics, Adaptive Leadership, negotiation, social leadership, and diversity, among many others.

The wave of disruption

Considering that 88% of the firms that were on the Fortune 500 list in 1955 are gone, the question is not whether or not organizations learn to move with rapid change; the question is how fast they do. It will soon be the norm for organizations to confront market disruptions head-on, evolve their business models to move with the rise of AI and automation, and at the same time, develop the soft skills Millennial talents seek most in their managers: coaching and mentoring.  This is why everyone from key decision-makers to rank-and-file needs to be learning the leadership and innovation skills that will help future-proof their organizations in an age where unicorns take on corporate behemoths — and win.

This is precisely what CAL Online offers, specifically to those who feel the need to upgrade their ability to initiate and manage change but do not know where to begin. “With this introduction of technology, we’re able to democratize all our best practices on innovation, leadership practices [to] a wider group of people,” explained Center for Asia Leadership co-founder and president Samuel Kim.

Established in 2014, the Center for Asia Leadership Initiatives (CALI) aims to address social needs and problems in Asia through research, development, training, and publications, all focused on social and public leadership, innovation, and educational practices.
The idea of the Center was sparked by the hope of connecting the vast educational resources at Harvard University with individuals and organizations in Asia who are working to address the core challenges of our times
